Abstract:
Obesity is a rapidly escalating public health concern of world generally and South Asia specially, influenced by unique cultural, dietary, and socioeconomic factors. Traditional models of obesity management often fail to resolve the issue in South Asian populations due to the cultural stigma associated with obesity, limited access to specialized care, and the widespread use of alternative and non-evidence-based weight loss methods.
This presentation explores a culturally contextualized, evidence-based framework for managing obesity in South Asia, integrating modern scientific innovation with regional practices. Key elements include tailoring dietary advice to local cuisines, leveraging digital health tools for patient engagement, and promoting physician led obesity clinics that are both accessible and sustainable. Special focus will be placed on the role of newer and stronger therapies like GLP-1 and GIP analogues in clinical settings, and how recent trials and real-world data support their use in the South Asian phenotype.
Additionally, this talk will highlight physician education and community sensitization programs to bridge gaps in knowledge and dismantle stigmas around obesity. Through case studies and implementation models, participants will gain practical insights into setting up interdisciplinary obesity management services that respect cultural values while staying anchored in global best practices.
