Abstract:
This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of intragastric balloon (IGB) placement in adolescents under 18 years old in Pakistan. Seven patients (6 males, 1 female) aged 14 to 17 years with a BMI range of 33 to 40 underwent Spatz balloon placement. Adjustments were made based on BMI and tolerance, with an initial fill volume of 200-250 ml. Follow-ups were conducted every three months, monitoring BMI, glucose levels, and overall health outcomes. The study demonstrated significant weight loss, with an average reduction of 10 kg in the first month and a total BMI decrease of 15-21 kg over 10-12 months. Complications were minimal, with nausea and cramps being the most common, managed effectively with medication and dietary modifications. One patient required early intervention for intolerance but showed improvement post-adjustment. The findings highlight IGB as a safe and effective obesity management tool for adolescents, emphasizing the need for structured follow-ups and dietary adherence.
