Abstract:
Childhood obesity is a growing public health challenge worldwide, with long-term physical, psychological, and economic consequences. Schools serve as critical environments for shaping children’s dietary habits, offering a unique opportunity to implement nutrition-focused interventions at scale. This presentation explores evidence-based strategies employed in school nutrition programs to prevent and reduce childhood obesity, including menu optimization, portion control, and implementation of USDA Smart Snacks guidelines, nutrition education, and family engagement initiatives. Drawing on case studies from diverse school districts, we highlight successful approaches to improving dietary quality, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, and fostering sustainable healthy behaviors among students. Additionally, the presentation examines the role of trained child nutrition professionals in program design, implementation, and evaluation, emphasizing their impact on long-term outcomes. Attendees will gain actionable insights into designing effective school-based nutrition programs, monitoring success metrics, and addressing systemic barriers to healthy eating in children. This session underscores the potential of school nutrition programs as a cornerstone in global efforts to combat childhood obesity and promote lifelong health.
