Title : Association between Serum Uric Acid level and Control of LDL cholesterol among Diabetes Mellitus patients in Korea

Background: In previous studies, it is reported that hyperuricemia is a risk factor for hypertension, metabolic syndrome, chronic renal disease, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes mellitus (DM). On the other hand, considering that patients with DM have a 2-4 times higher mortality rate due to CVD than those without DM, it is recommended that low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goal of <100 should be maintained. However, according to existing studies, the achieving of treatment goal for dyslipidemia in DM is not satisfactory. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum uric acid levels (SUA) and LDL-C control in Korean DM patients.

Conclusion: High serum uric acid levels were associated with poor LDL cholesterol control in DM patients. Especially in females, high serum uric acid levels were independently associated with an increased risk of poor LDL cholesterol control

What will audience learn from your presentation?

Hyperuricemia patients are treated on medication when they have gout symptoms, or their serum uric acid level is higher than 9.0mg/dL without symptom. However, many previous studies have shown that hyperuricemia should be considered as one of diagnosis criteria of metabolic syndrome, because hyperuricemia is a risk factor of several complications such as cardiovascular disease. This study will provide an opportunity to consider the necessity of controlling serum uric acid level with LDL-C control in DM patients to prevent complication disease like CVD.
