Weight management in aging populations

As people age, maintaining a healthy weight becomes more challenging due to changes in metabolism, muscle mass, and hormone levels. Aging populations often experience a gradual decline in metabolic rate, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it. Additionally, muscle mass decreases with age, reducing the number of calories burned at rest. Chronic health conditions, such as arthritis or diabetes, and medications that affect appetite or metabolism can also complicate weight management. For older adults, a combination of regular physical activity, including strength training, and a nutrient-dense diet is essential for managing weight effectively. By focusing on muscle preservation and enhancing metabolic function, older individuals can improve their quality of life and reduce the risk of age-related diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
