Pregorexia

Pregorexia, a portmanteau of "pregnancy" and "anorexia," refers to a concerning condition where expecting mothers develop an unhealthy obsession with controlling weight gain during pregnancy. This condition manifests as extreme dieting, excessive exercising, and a persistent fear of gaining weight while pregnant. Individuals affected by pregorexia may restrict their calorie intake, obsessively monitor their body shape, and engage in dangerous weight-loss behaviors detrimental to both their health and the baby's development. This condition can lead to severe complications such as malnutrition, dehydration, premature birth, low birth weight, and developmental issues for the fetus. Pregorexia often stems from societal pressures, body image concerns, or a history of Eating disorders. It poses significant risks to both the mother's well-being and the health of the unborn child. Addressing pregorexia requires comprehensive support from healthcare professionals, including mental health specialists, nutritionists, and obstetricians. Treatment involves counseling, education on healthy weight management during pregnancy, and establishing a balanced approach to nutrition and exercise to ensure the well-being of both mother and baby. Awareness campaigns and education about the dangers of pregorexia are crucial to help pregnant individuals recognize and seek support for this condition, promoting a healthier and safer pregnancy journey.
