Metabolic flexibility in obesity

Metabolic flexibility refers to the body’s ability to efficiently switch between using carbohydrates and fats as fuel sources depending on availability and energy needs. In obesity, metabolic flexibility is often reduced, meaning the body struggles to utilize fat for energy, instead relying more heavily on carbohydrates. This dysfunction can lead to fat accumulation and difficulty in losing weight, as the body is inefficient in burning stored fat. Impaired metabolic flexibility is also closely linked to insulin resistance, a common feature in obesity. Enhancing metabolic flexibility can be achieved through regular physical activity, dietary improvements, and weight loss. Strategies that promote fat oxidation and insulin sensitivity can restore the body’s ability to burn fat more effectively, helping to reduce fat stores and improve overall metabolic health. Restoring metabolic flexibility is key to managing obesity and supporting long-term weight loss.
