Ketone bodies in obesity

Ketone bodies are produced by the liver during periods of low carbohydrate intake or fasting, serving as an alternative energy source to glucose. In obesity, the body's fat stores are abundant, yet the efficient utilization of these fat reserves via ketogenesis may be impaired. This dysregulation can exacerbate weight gain by promoting fat storage rather than its breakdown. Ketones also influence appetite control, potentially reducing hunger. However, prolonged obesity can affect the body’s sensitivity to ketones, leading to challenges in utilizing fat for energy and contributing to weight management difficulties. Understanding how ketone bodies interact with metabolic pathways in obesity offers insights into therapeutic strategies, such as ketogenic diets, to enhance fat burning and improve metabolic health, though their effectiveness may vary among individuals.
