Fasting and intermittent fasting in obesity

Fasting, and more specifically intermittent fasting (IF), has become a popular method for managing obesity. IF involves cycling between periods of fasting and eating, and it is believed to promote weight loss by restricting calorie intake and improving metabolic function. Research suggests that fasting can increase fat oxidation, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce visceral fat. Additionally, IF may help regulate hormones related to hunger, such as ghrelin and leptin. However, it’s important to approach fasting cautiously, as it may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain health conditions or eating disorders. It’s also essential to maintain balanced nutrition during eating periods to avoid nutrient deficiencies. For effective and sustainable weight management, IF should be combined with healthy lifestyle choices like regular exercise and a nutrient-dense diet.
