Ann Gilbert, Speaker at Obesity Conference
Purdue University, United States

Abstract:

Obesity management continues to face a critical barrier: adherence. Traditional land-based exercise models often fail individuals living with obesity due to joint pain, mobility limitations, and psychological barriers such as fear, discomfort, and perceived failure. As a result, many individuals disengage before meaningful progress can occur, reinforcing cycles of inactivity and weight gain.

Aquatic fitness offers a powerful, yet underutilized, solution. By leveraging the principles of buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure, the aquatic environment reduces joint loading by up to 90%, enhances circulation, and provides natural resistance for strength and cardiovascular conditioning. This creates a unique setting where movement becomes accessible, comfortable, and achievable—often for the first time in years.

This keynote will explore how aquatic fitness serves not merely as a modification, but as a primary intervention for individuals on a lifelong health and weight management journey. Attendees will gain insight into the physiological, psychological, and behavioral benefits of water-based exercise, including improved movement confidence, reduced pain, and significantly increased adherence rates.

Drawing from real-world programming and long-term community-based outcomes, this session will present a practical framework for implementing aquatic fitness across the continuum of care—from initial engagement to progression and, when appropriate, transition to land-based activity.

Ultimately, this presentation challenges the traditional exercise paradigm by positioning aquatic fitness as a gateway to sustainable movement, improved quality of life, and long-term weight management success.
